December Question
How safe are cosmetics ?
The FDA has allowed the cosmetics industry to self regulate since 1976. There are studies linking some cosmetic ingredients to cancer, hormone inbalance and heavy metal toxicity.
Choose nail polish that is SAFE professional-quality that are quick-drying and super long-lasting that are formulated WITHOUT Phthalates . This chemical is known to cause a broad range of birth defects and lifelong reproductive problems in laboratory animals exposed to these chemicals during pregnancy and after birth. Phthalates are also known to be hormone-mimicking chemicals, - Environment/safe-cosmetics like Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics
Henna hair coloring does take longer but it is safer. Early hair dye formulations contained chemicals, including aromatic amines that were found to cause cancer in animals. In the mid- to late 1970s, however, manufacturers changed the components in dye products to eliminate some of these chemicals. For the most part, the increases were limited to women who began using hair dye before 1980, although an increased risk of follicular lymphoma was observed among women who began using dark-colored dyes after 1980. Risk was greatest among those who had used permanent dyes for longer durations (15 or more years). http://www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/factsheet/Risk/hair-dyes
Lead isn't the only toxin lurking in your lip stick. A new study  found that women who apply lipstick two to three times daily can ingest a significant amount of aluminum and cadmium —20 percent of the daily amount that's considered safe in drinking water. Lead was detected in in over 60% percent of the lipsticks sampled including Burt's Bees tinted chapstick. It is not as simple as just putting these chemicals on your lips but the fact that they are ingested as you eat and drink or simply lick your lips.
The Environmental Working Group also has a database with information on cosmetic products and the risky ingredients that could be in them, and the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics has a list of products online as well.

March Question
Should you take PQQ with your CoQ10?
Pyrroloquinoline quinone is a potent antioxidant. It is a competition for resveratrol and quercetin as the most healthful nutraceutical of the three. These are the suggested benefits of PQQ do to it's ability to optimize mitochondrial function.

  • An overall improvement in energy levels
  • Improved cognitive function and memory
  • Reduction in mitochondrial degradation
  • Increased skin elasticity
  • Neuro-protectant
  • Cardio-protectant
  • Enhanced nerve growth

CoQ10 has similar benefits but it is fat soluble meaning there must be good lipids present for it to metabolize properly. PQQ is a water-soluble compound so it is easier to metabolize but also easier to flush it from the body. The extra benefit of PQQ is that it has been shown to stimulate the growth of fresh mitochondria! Mitochondrial dysfunction is noted as a key marker of aging.

April's question.
Why do they iodize salt?

If the body not have enough iodine to do its job the body can cause the thyroid to work harder. This can result in an enlarged thyroid gland (goiter) that usually becomes evident as a swollen neck. These were very common in the Midwest region as settlers moved westward. Melting glaciers had washed iodine and other minerals out of the soil and there was no source of fresh sea food. By the early 1900's iodine deficiency was so common in the US and Canadian midwest it became known as the goiter belt. The addition of iodine to table salt improved public health. Now they tell us to limit our salt intake but they forgot to tell us to take iodine.

Iodine is a mineral therefore the body cannot manufacture it. Iodine must come from the diet.  Sea food and sea vegetables are good sources. Most of the world’s iodine is found in the ocean, where it is concentrated by sea life, especially seaweed. You will find very little in other foods, unless it is added during processing as it is with iodized salt. Another good way to add iodine to your diet is to use a few drops of liquid Nascent Iodine  in a glass of water first thing in the morning. This form of consumable Iodine is useful for energy release.

Iodine deficiency during pregnancy is serious for both the mother and child. The ovaries have the second largest concentration of iodine in the body.  Progesterone  hormone is released by the ovaries. Proper progesterone levels are needed to carry a baby to term  Low iodine carries a risk of high blood pressure during pregnancy for the mother. Mental retardation is a possibility for the baby because iodine plays an important role in development of the central nervous system. Iodine is needed to prevent fibrocystic breast disease, breast cancer, eye disease, diabetes, and heart disease and stroke. Iodine is also needed in radiation emergencies to protect the thyroid gland against radioactive iodides.

Dr. Broda Barnes developed an at home test for thyroid function. Shake down a basal thermometer and place it at your bedside. The first thing in the morning put it in your armpit and rest for ten minutes. Record it for 4 days. If your thyroid is working properly your temperature should be 98 or above. Parents should take their child’s temperature when they are well. My children ran a standard temp of 97.2.. If they ran a temp over 99 I knew they were ill. Menstruating women should do this on the four days after their period starts. If your temperature runs below 98 degrees you may need to supplement your nutrition or contact your doctor for a thyroid test. You will want to be checked for T3, T4, Free T3, Free T4, TSH and possibly thyroid antibodies. Two of  Dr. Barnes many significant discoveries were:

  •       The development and use of thyroid function blood tests left many patients with clinical symptoms of hypothyroidism undiagnosed and untreated.

  •       Patients taking thyroid replacement therapy have much better improvement of symptoms with natural desiccated thyroid hormone(Armour) rather than synthetic thyroid hormones.

When you start using a thyroid support program it should include adrenal glandular product also. Thyroid and adrenal hormones are synergistic, they work best together.

Reader feedback:
Before the 1970s we got iodine in our breads, 1mg daily. All of your blood goes through your thyroid gland.  Dr. Jarvis, Folk Medicine of Vermont published 1950. Iodine kills pathogens in the blood (hiv, hepatitis, pneumonia, etc.)
What we need to do is supplement breads with iodine again (also magnesium and potassium), just like the good old days before our health epidemic started.
I did iodine fulfillment therapy for low thyroid and my son did it to detox mercury and get rid of his Asperger’s and Tourettes. It also treats cancer better than chemo. The cost was $20 for a bottle of Lugol’s iodine. Sherry

March Essential Oil
Sandalwood:  This was used in ancient times to assist in meditation. It has a chemistry that is 90% Sesquiterpenes, the highest of all the oils. Some researchers believe the gold given to the Christ child was sandalwood oil. It has a gold color and was valued as gold. Sesquiterpenes have been found to deprogram misinformation in the body and carry oxygen to the cellular level. It can stimulate the release of melatonin necessary for a good sleep cycle. More  properties attributed to sesquiterpenes are:

  • anti-septic
  • anti-inflammatory
  • soothing to inflamed tissue
  • can produce profound effects on emotions and hormonal balance
  • work on the liver
  • are a gland stimulant
  • increase oxygen around the pineal and pituitary gland
  • have the ability to go beyond the Blood Brain Barrier                                     (meaning they can cross the blood brain barrier increasing the oxygen to the brain)

April's oil
Peppermint
The benefits of peppermint oil include its ability to treat indigestion, respiratory problems, headache, nausea, fever, stomach and bowel spasms, as well as for pain relief due to the presence of menthol. It is considered  one of oldest medicines due to it's considerable history.  The many health benefits of peppermint and peppermint oil have been studied and proved in scientific tests. Studies have shown that peppermint oil caps are useful in treating IBS symptoms.  Because the strong aromatic oils can cause heartburn be sure confirm the tablets are 'enteric coated'. This means that they have a special coating  that allows them to reach the intestines before they dissolve, rather than breaking down in the stomach where they do less good.

Peppermint essential oil has been researched and shown to reduce appetite and curb cravings — a key component to weight loss when uncontrollable cravings can derail even the most determined individual.  In a recent study by Dr. Bryan Raudenbush at the Wheeling Jesuit University of West Virginia, it was discovered that individuals who inhaled peppermint oil over 2 week period consumed on average 3,000 less calories per week than those who didn’t use the peppermint.  Not only that, the peppermint users reported a feeling of being satiated when inhaling the peppermint and didn’t feel deprived by their reduced caloric intake!
How can you use peppermint to support weight loss?

  • Inhale therapeutic-quality peppermint oil before a meal — you’ll automatically feel more full, so you won’t eat as much!
  • Inhale peppermint oil before exercise to increase your stamina.
  • Add peppermint oil to your water.   In a glass pitcher, add 4-5 drops of peppermint to 2 quarts of pure water.  You may add 1 drop to a glass of water.  This is very refreshing, and also good for digestion .http://essentialsurvival.org/healthy-weight-loss/

May's question.
Why are my allergies worse in the Spring?

This is true for many people. The trees actually start to pollinate before you can see the buds. Our bodies are under the stress of making a seasonal transition from cold(er) weather. There is irritation and inflammation as a result. There are many natural remedies that can support the body through this stress. Vitamin C and MSM sulfur are beneficial in supporting the mucus membranes. You can build up to a tolerance level of Vitamin C by taking 500-1000mg hourly until you get a loose stool.

There are many herbs that help the body release excess mucus. Marshmallow, stinging nettle, pleurisy root, hyssop, eyebright, mullein, fennel, elecampane, yarrow, ginger and fenugreek especially in combination with thyme. These are available as teas, capsules or herbal extracts.  Slippery elm lozenges have been used by singers in smoky bars to protect their throats. These and many other combinations available in natural food stores.

Homeopathic remedies conform to a standardized pharmacopeia and  provide a safe and effective choice for adults and children. They come as liquid tinctures or small pellets to melt under your tongue. The products made for infants dissolve as they land in their mouth. Chose a homeopathic guide like the Family Guide to Homeopathy . Carefully determine your symptoms and select the proper remedy such as Kali mur for post nasal drip to relieve coughing episodes or Kali sulph and Kali bich to help to control mucus production, soothes a clogged up chest. Download a free homeopathic guide here.

A third natural choice is proteolytic (protein digesting) enzymes. They help to digest the pollen proteins entering the body. Enzyme supplements have been used for over 30 years to treat sinusitis. In 1966, Dr. S.J. Taub, M.D., found that bromelain, an enzyme from pineapple that digests proteins, made noticeable changes in patients suffering from  sinusitis. Bromelain helped to thin nasal mucus while reducing swelling and redness of the sinus membranes. Another  study in 1967  showed that bromelain could help clear the mucus from sinusitis while it stimulated immune function and reduce headaches. A study using a natural enzyme blend of bromelain, chymotrypsin, pancreatin, papain and trypsin plus the bioflavonoid rutin showed that these enzymes were as effective as the anti-inflammatory prescription used in the study at reducing headache and toothache pain from sinus pressure.  After 14 days, researchers concluded that the treatments brought similar results but no there were side effects for the enzyme group.
Proteolyic enzymes work best when taken with water or juice on an empty stomach before meals or two hours after eating.

Tips to relive allergy mucus

  • Inhaling steam from a tub of boiling water or hot shower to loosen mucus
  • Drink at least eight glasses of water daily to loosen phlegm and thin mucus. Add fresh lemon to enhance the benefits.
  • Softly blow your nose to prevent mucus from being forced into your ears
  • Gargle regularly with warm water and sea salt
  • Drink hot liquids like herbal tea or chicken broth to moisten the airways
  • Add a teaspoon of turmeric to a cup of applesauce for its antiseptic properties
  • Use a humidifier or cool mist vaporizer to help to moisten the air  in winter
  • Remove chemical irritants like cleaners, air fresheners or paint fumes
  • Add a few drops of eucalyptus oil to a vaporizer to relieve congestion
  • Stop smoking as it irritates the throat and worsens respiratory conditions
  • Eat spicy foods, horseradish or hot chili peppers to loosen mucus

Milk products should be eaten only once every 4 days to limit the mucus causing effect of milk, cheese, sour cream, pizza, pudding, ice cream, Parmesan cheese, casein protein and whey, etc. My allergist told me that artificial sweeteners should also be avoided by milk sensitive people.
I had a clerk at a major grocery store tell me that when he stopped drinking milk his acne went away so there can be other benefits to changing your diet.

Up until recently, the only way to tell if your bones are brittle and fragile was to visit your doctor for a bone density scan. Due to a recent Yale study, you can do a simple 10-second test at home to check for thinning bones.
In the study, Yale researchers analyzed the facial wrinkles of a group of participant’s. The researchers then scanned the skeletal bone mass and density of the participants using medical equipment. When they looked at the results, they were amazed to discover an  unmistakable relationship between wrinkles and bone problems. The lead researcher said "We found that deepening and worsening skin wrinkles are related to lower bone density among the study participants."
"The worse the wrinkles, the lesser the bone density, and this relationship was independent of age or of factors known to influence bone mass."
The results of this study mean you can quickly check your bone density by looking in the mirror. If your wrinkles are getting deeper and more defined, then you may have bone problems. Receding gums are also one early sign of osteoporosis.

Cultures with the highest calcium intake actually have the highest osteoporosis rates also. Calcium is only one component of bone structure. There are over 20 vitamins and minerals needed for strong bone building. Bones need to be constantly regenerating to be really strong. Estrogen breaks down old bone but progesterone is needed to stimulate bone regrowth. Our fat cells can make estrogen our whole life but progesterone production starts decreasing in perimenopause. http://www.betterbones.com/osteoporosis/

August's Question:
I am using Armour Thyroid but I am not improving like I thought I would. What else can I do?

Here is a case of which came first the chicken or the egg. The thyroid is directly connected to adrenal function and sex hormonal balance. All three need balanced nutrition to function effectively starting with over 70 trace minerals. Most of the longest living cultures have a good source of trace minerals. It can be in the water from glaciers or food from the sea. Using a quality sea salt is easy way to get trace minerals. A craving for salt or salty foods is an indication of adrenal stress. The most common reasons for adrenal fatigue and dysfunction along with mineral deficiency include our Standard American Diet, stress, inflammation and an underactive thyroid. But what’s causing the inflammation and underactive thyroid. The poor SAD diet, bad digestion, over use of antacids and antibiotics. This can lead to Candida, an internal yeast overgrowth. There are over 170 different yeast toxins that are produced by yeast in their life cycle. Some of these toxins can block thyroid function. Candida overgrowth also causes Leaky Gut Syndrome. The toxins are leaked into the bloodstream and lead to allergies and a inflammatory state that can cause arthritis, chronic fatigue and pain. You can rebuild the body with probiotics, anti-Candida herbs, enzymes, homeopathic medicine and nutrition. There are at least seven macro minerals needed for thyroid function, they include iodine, selenium, magnesium, manganese, molybdenum, boron and zinc. Magnesium is essential for adrenal function also. Most Americans are deficit in magnesium.
When you set up a program to reverse a yeast overgrowth, one of the common side effects is a Herxheimer reaction. This is a reaction to toxins released by the death of harmful organisms within the body. You may feel worse before you feel better. This can usually be avoided. with effective detoxification and elimination programs.

September Question:
What do you consider the most important supplement?

Maintaining the health of your digestive tract is essential. Probiotics or good bacteria are the organisms that help maintain the proper pH or acid/ alkaline balance in your digestive tract. Probiotics are destroyed by antibiotics and other medications. How often does a woman end up with a yeast infection or a man with jock itch after taking a course of antibiotics? Probiotics are also sensitive to stress.  It is essential to replace the good bacteria at these times. It is best to take them on an empty stomach before eating unless they are enteric coated to protect them from stomach acid.  The most important point in choosing a quality probiotic supplement is making sure the bacteria count is stated at time of product expiration and not time of manufacture.
Probiotics help regenerate the lining of your digestive tract. Just as you are constantly sloughing off dead skin cells externally, so should the lining of  your intestines. These cells are part of the "fiber" in a healthy stool. A healthy level of probiotics will help you to maintain proper bowel function. The body is programed to  balance "food in / garbage out" so you should have two or three bowel movements a day to be healthy. Eating good foods( non GMO and organic) should be your main source of nutrition. Your digestive tract is the starting point for you to absorb your vitamins, minerals, herbs and other nutrition. Probiotics are all the big rage today as you watch the TV commercials. I have been teaching about their use in it's many  forms since 1980.

  • Lactobacillus acidophilus. This is the most common strain found in supplements. It is important for maintaining the integrity of your intestinal walls so you can enjoy maximum absorption of nutrients. I is needed for a healthy immune system.
  • Lactobacillus fermentum. These beneficial probiotic help neutralize some of the toxic products made during digestion. It  promotes a healthy balance of bacteria in the gut.
  • Lactobacillus rhamnosus. The "travel probiotic," form of beneficial bacteria has been found to be extremely effective in reducing occurrences of  traveler's diarrhea known as Montezuma's revenge.
  • Bifidobacteria longum. This good bacteria  helps to crowd out bad bacteria that cause discomfort and helps to neutralize everyday toxins in the gut. It also helps efficiently break down carbohydrates without producing excess gas.
  • Bifidobacterium infantis, the friendly bacteria most prominent in infants. Babies born naturally are more apt to develop this naturally.  It promotes proper digestion and absorption, encourages the formation of antibodies against undesirable bacteria, viruses and allergens -- especially important for babies delivered by caesarean, and is recommended for both breast-fed and formula-fed babies. It was commercially introduced in Life Start made by Natren Co.
  • Bifidobacteria bifidum. The  small and large intestine both need this probiotic for smooth, healthy digestion. It's especiall ybeneficial for proper digestion of dairy products Bifidobacteria has many forms: B. Breve, B. Infantis, B. lactis, B. Longum, Bifido, Bifido Bacterium Longum, Bifidobacterias, Bifidobactérie, Bifidobactéries, Bifidobacterium, Bifidobacterium adolescentis; Bifidobacterium animalis, Bifidobacterium bifidum; Bifidobacterium breve; Bifidobacterium infantis; Bifidobacterium lactis; Bifidobacterium longum, Bifidum, Bifidus, Bifidus Brevis, Bifidus Infantis, Bifidus Longum, Bifidobacteria Bifidus, Lactobacillus Bifidus.

September Essential oil- YoungLiving updates
Palo santo (Bursera graveolens) comes from the same botanical family as Frankincense, Myrrh and Copal.. It is found in South America rather than the Middle East. Like Frankincense, Palo Santo is known as a spiritual oil. Traditionally used by the Incas to purify and cleanse the spirit from negative energies. Even its Spanish name reflects how highly this oil is regarded: Palo Santo means "holy wood" or "sacred wood." I would think highly about any oil with a reputation for keeping away mosquitos and other flying insects.
Palo Santo has been used for relieving inflammation found in common colds and flu, stress, asthma, headaches, anxiety, depression. It provides an uplifting scent that raises your vibration to deal with emotional pain.
In Ecuador it is against the law to remove or cut down Palo Santo trees as they are protected. There are very few companies that are permitted to even touch the trees, more or less produce the essential oil.
Any of the oils that are from trees (Western Red Cedar, Spruce, Cedarwood, Frankincense, etc) will provide stabilization, grounding and security to our being, physically and emotionally.
Duringe winter the weather can change often so you need to protect yourself. Put Palo Santo under the nose and when traveling by plane this is a great time to protect yourself to keep you from breathing in all that bacterial. Apply under nose, add to a hanky and cover nose so often while on the plane.
Palo Santo is one of the constituent oils of Rutavala from young Living.
It is interesting to me that the Latin name for Palo Santo is Bursera graveolens. Every person has hundreds of bursa found throughout the body. The function of a bursa is to decrease friction between two surfaces that move in different directions.  The bursa is a slippery, fluid-containing sac.  Normally, the bursa is thin and contains a small amount of fluid.  And the herb Graviola has been found in in vitro studies to have anti cancer potential.

November Question
Which supplement do you consider the most unique?

I am astounded by Alpha Lipoic Acid. It can improve the function and conduction of neurons. Doctors in Germany have been using Alpha Lipoic Acid in high doses (600mg) for over forty years for the treatment of  Diabetic neuropathy.  The symptoms include burning, pain, and numbness in the feet, legs and arms. Diabetics need to be cautious when starting to use Alpha Lipoic Acid because it can enhances the effect of insulin. Diabetics should start with only 50mgs and  increase gradually to the 600mg while monitoring their blood sugar and insulin requirements. Alpha lipoic Acid helps the body to normalize blood sugar by breaking down carbohydrates and  making energy for the other organs in the body.

Alpha Lipoic Acid was also found to reduce nerve pain from a herniated disc over a 60-day period. This is the most common cause of sciatica. This is  pain, tingling, or numbness produced by an irritation of the nerve roots that lead to the sciatica nerve.

Alpha Lipoic Acid is sold in two forms. R Alpha Lipoic Acid is considered the more active, available form of ALA. It helps the body recycle vitamins C and E. This may be why it has been used for diseases of the heart and blood vessels like a disorder called cardiac autonomic neuropathy.

Alpha Lipoic Acid has also used for eye-related disorders, such as damage to the retina, cataracts and glaucoma. An genetic eye disease called Wilson’s disease prevents the liver from removing extra copper. Too much copper is poisonous and can cause life-threatening organ damage. The liver filters toxins and releases them into bile that carries the toxins and wastes out of the body.  Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA), is recommended for liver health regimens because it is known to protect – and even restore the integrity of liver cells.

Alpha Lipoic Acid also increases the antioxidant glutathione that is a major liver detox nutrient to remove all kinds of toxins. Dr. Berkson was a Cleveland doctor who saved two  patients who had eaten death cap mushrooms with IV’s of Alpha Lipoic Acid in the 1970′s. Alpha Lipoic Acid is invaluable as an antidote for acute chemical poisonings along with drugs, solvents, pesticides, radiation etc.

ALA has also been used for memory loss, chronic fatigue syndrome, Lyme disease, HIV/AIDS and  cancer.

November Essential Oil

Essential oils used in combination such as the layering in a Rain Drop program can amplify the benefits of the oils. For repair and regeneration of nerve tissue Frankincense, Helichrysum, and Roman Chamomile are most often suggested.

Frankincense
Using the right therapeutic grade of frankincense species for your needs is important.
Massage onto the reflex points for the eyes - tips of fingers and toes.
You can use an indirect compress method morning and evening:
1-2 drops of FRANKINCENSE essential oil in palm
Rub palms together/Cup palms over OPEN EYES for three minutes
