Merry Nutrition - Better Nutrition / Better Health
April's question.
Why do they iodize salt?

If the body not have enough iodine to do its job the body can cause the thyroid to work harder. This can result in an enlarged thyroid gland (goiter) that usually becomes evident as a swollen neck. These were very common in the Midwest region as settlers moved westward. Melting glaciers had washed iodine and other minerals out of the soil and there was no source of fresh sea food. By the early 1900's iodine deficiency was so common in the US and Canadian midwest it became known as the goiter belt. The addition of iodine to table salt improved public health. Now they tell us to limit our salt intake but they forgot to tell us to take iodine.

Iodine is a mineral therefore the body cannot manufacture it. Iodine must come from the diet.  Sea food and sea vegetables are good sources. Most of the world’s iodine is found in the ocean, where it is concentrated by sea life, especially seaweed. You will find very little in other foods, unless it is added during processing as it is with iodized salt. Another good way to add iodine to your diet is to use a few drops of liquid Nascent Iodine  in a glass of water first thing in the morning. This form of consumable Iodine is useful for energy release.

Iodine deficiency during pregnancy is serious for both the mother and child. The ovaries have the second largest concentration of iodine in the body.  Progesterone  hormone is released by the ovaries. Proper progesterone levels are needed to carry a baby to term  Low iodine carries a risk of high blood pressure during pregnancy for the mother. Mental retardation is a possibility for the baby because iodine plays an important role in development of the central nervous system. Iodine is needed to prevent fibrocystic breast disease, breast cancer, eye disease, diabetes, and heart disease and stroke. Iodine is also needed in radiation emergencies to protect the thyroid gland against radioactive iodides.

Dr. Broda Barnes developed an at home test for thyroid function. Shake down a basal thermometer and place it at your bedside. The first thing in the morning put it in your armpit and rest for ten minutes. Record it for 4 days. If your thyroid is working properly your temperature should be 98 or above. Parents should take their child’s temperature when they are well. My children ran a standard temp of 97.2.. If they ran a temp over 99 I knew they were ill. Menstruating women should do this on the four days after their period starts. If your temperature runs below 98 degrees you may need to supplement your nutrition or contact your doctor for a thyroid test. You will want to be checked for T3, T4, Free T3, Free T4, TSH and possibly thyroid antibodies. Two of  Dr. Barnes many significant discoveries were:

  •       The development and use of thyroid function blood tests left many patients with clinical symptoms of hypothyroidism undiagnosed and untreated.
  •       Patients taking thyroid replacement therapy have much better improvement of symptoms with natural desiccated thyroid hormone(Armour) rather than synthetic thyroid hormones.

This month's Essential Oil

The benefits of peppermint oil include its ability to treat indigestion, respiratory problems, headache, nausea, fever, stomach and bowel spasms, as well as for pain relief due to the presence of menthol. It is considered  one of oldest medicines due to it's considerable history.  The many health benefits of peppermint and peppermint oil have been studied and proved in scientific tests. Studies have shown that peppermint oil caps are useful in treating IBS symptoms.  Because the strong aromatic oils can cause heartburn be sure confirm the tablets are 'enteric coated'. This means that they have a special coating  that allows them to reach the intestines before they dissolve, rather than breaking down in the stomach where they do less good.

Peppermint essential oil has been researched and shown to reduce appetite and curb cravings — a key component to weight loss when uncontrollable cravings can derail even the most determined individual.  In a recent study by Dr. Bryan Raudenbush at the Wheeling Jesuit University of West Virginia, it was discovered that individuals who inhaled peppermint oil over 2 week period consumed on average 3,000 less calories per week than those who didn’t use the peppermint.  Not only that, the peppermint users reported a feeling of being satiated when inhaling the peppermint and didn’t feel deprived by their reduced caloric intake!
How can you use peppermint to support weight loss?
  • Inhale therapeutic-quality peppermint oil before a meal — you’ll automatically feel more full, so you won’t eat as much!
  • Inhale peppermint oil before exercise to increase your stamina.
  • Add peppermint oil to your water.   In a glass pitcher, add 4-5 drops of peppermint to 2 quarts of pure water.  You may add 1 drop to a glass of water.  This is very refreshing, and also good for digestion .

March Question
Should you take PQQ with your CoQ10?
Pyrroloquinoline quinone is a potent antioxidant. It is a competition for resveratrol and quercetin as the most healthful nutraceutical of the three. These are the suggested benefits of PQQ do to it's ability to optimize mitochondrial function.
  • An overall improvement in energy levels
  • Improved cognitive function and memory
  • Reduction in mitochondrial degradation
  • Increased skin elasticity
  • Neuro-protectant
  • Cardio-protectant
  • Enhanced nerve growth
CoQ10 has similar benefits but it is fat soluble meaning there must be good lipids present for it to metabolize properly. PQQ is a water-soluble compound so it is easier to metabolize but also easier to flush it from the body. The extra benefit of PQQ is that it has been shown to stimulate the growth of fresh mitochondria! Mitochondrial dysfunction is noted as a key marker of aging.

March Essential Oil
Sandalwood:  This was used in ancient times to assist in meditation. It has a chemistry that is 90% Sesquiterpenes, the highest of all the oils. Some researchers believe the gold given to the Christ child was sandalwood oil. It has a gold color and was valued as gold. Sesquiterpenes have been found to deprogram misinformation in the body and carry oxygen to the cellular level. It can stimulate the release of melatonin necessary for a good sleep cycle. More  properties attributed to sesquiterpenes are:

  • anti-septic
  • anti-inflammatory
  • soothing to inflamed tissue
  • can produce profound effects on emotions and hormonal balance
  • work on the liver
  • are a gland stimulant
  • increase oxygen around the pineal and pituitary gland
  • have the ability to go beyond the Blood Brain Barrier                                     (meaning they can cross the blood brain barrier increasing the oxygen to the brain)
